Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance (TA) Program
51²Ö¿â is here to help you leverage the education benefits you have access to through the Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance (TA) program which provides financial assistance to service members for voluntary off-duty education programs in support of professional and personal self-development goals. TA is available for courses that are offered in the classroom or by distance learning and are part of an approved academic degree or certificate program.Ìý
TA Funds are a unique, distinct source of financial aid available to eligible service members. TA will be the first payer of tuition charged to the student (this means TA pays first and the student is liable for any remaining costs related to tuition and fees by paying out of pocket or by using other means of financial aid).
TA policies and procedures are specific to each branch. Eligible service members must receive approval from an Educational Services Officer (ESO) or counselor within the military service prior to enrolling. Service personnel should reach out to their ESO for more information.
Department of Defense Personnel Tuition Assistance Refund Process
Department of Defense Personnel using Tuition Assistance (TA) from their branch of service will have any unearned TA funds returned to their branch of service on a proportional basis through at least the 60 percent portion of the period for which the funds were provided. TA funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned to the respective branch of service based upon when a student stops attending (withdrawal from, dropping the course, or ceasing to attend).
Refund calculations apply to any student who is attending this institution and withdrawals within 60% into the period of enrollment for which the student has received TA. Once a student has completed more than 60% of the period of enrollment, all of their assistance has been earned (by the school) and will be retained by the university.
Barry’s follows this schedule for the return of unearned TA funds to the government:
