Additional Information

Unusual Enrollment History

The U.S. Department of Education has established regulations to prevent cases of fraud and abuse in the Federal Pell Grant and/or Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program by identifying students with unusual enrollment histories. Unusual Enrollment History (UEH) is defined as the specific pattern the U.S. Department of Education uses to select students who have received federal aid at multiple institutions over the past four academic/award years.

Students who are flagged as having unusual enrollment history by the U.S. Department of Education will require additional review by the Office of Financial Aid in order to determine financial aid eligibility. We will check your financial aid history to determine all previous institutions where you received federal aid during the last four aid years, and verify that academic credit was earned at each institution during the relevant years. The Financial Aid Office will first review any official transcripts already submitted to 51²Ö¿â. If there is no transcript from a school that appears in the student's financial aid history, or if the transcript does not include the period in question, the Financial Aid Office will require an official or unofficial transcript, or grade report to confirm credits earned.

If the review demonstrates that the student earned academic credit at each institution for the period(s) in which aid was received, the student will be cleared and financial aid will be awarded.

If the review shows the student did not earn credit at an institution where he/she received federal aid, that student will need to provide a written statement explaining the personal and/or academic reasons why he/she failed to earn academic credit and present documentation to support the explanation provided. The written statement and documentation will forwarded to the appeals committee for review. Once a determination has been made, the student will be notified.

Transfer Monitoring

The U.S. Department of Education requires 51²Ö¿â to review the financial aid history of students who transfer from one institution to another during the same award year. This process is called Transfer Monitoring. The Financial Aid Office uses the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) database to determine whether students have used any Pell Grant or Direct Loan funds at another institution during the most recent year. This prevents awarding in excess of allowable annual limits.

The Financial Aid Office must make sure that students have eligibility remaining for Pell Grant and Direct Loans that may have been partially used at the prior college/university. The institution submits the student's name to a monitoring list and waits seven (7) days until the school before disbursing financial aid funds. Additionally, Pell Grant and Direct Loan disbursement is placed on hold until this process is complete. Depending on what aid and amount(s) were received at a previous institution, financial aid eligibility at 51²Ö¿â may be reduced or cancelled accordingly.

Students who have not used federal aid during the current year do not need to take any action during this process. Students who have used federal financial at a previous institution during the year should contact that school to cancel any pending aid.
