Admissions Overview

You need a minimum of 90 semester hours of undergraduate study at an accredited institution in order to be considered for 51²Ö¿â's School of Podiatric Medicine. The university prefers the completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college of arts and sciences in the United States.

The School of Podiatric Medicine seeks to identify and recruit those students most likely to succeed in podiatric medical education regardless of age, race and ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Though an official MCAT score is required for admission it is not needed to be granted an interview. BUSPM also welcomes applications from veterans of military service.

AACPMAS

51²Ö¿â's School of Podiatric Medicine and other institutions offering programs in podiatric medicine are participants in the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine Application Services (AACPMAS). This service allows you to complete a single set of AACPMAS forms for any of the colleges of podiatric medicine. The service collects and collates data, computes grade point averages, and transmits copies of the application to the college/school(s) selected by you on the application. International Students

International candidates are welcome to apply to our program in podiatric medicine and are considered based on their qualifications, without regard to their international status.Ìý If you are applying as an international student, it is in your best interest to apply as early as possible to allow ample time for student visa processing. Although being granted a visa by the United States embassy in your country is not guaranteed, 51²Ö¿â has extensive experience in admitting and assisting international students and will do all we can to help you with that part of the process.Ìý

All applicants to 51²Ö¿â School of Podiatric Medicine are automatically considered for academic scholarships, based on a variety of factors, including academic and non-academic qualifications.Ìý

The scholarships are funded through contributions from private donors, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, campus organizations, and corporations.Ìý

Transfer Policy

No transfer from another Podiatric Medicine school into the first or second year of BUSPM is permitted. Students who enroll in the BUSPM and who have completed an analogous graduate-level course at another institution may qualify to transfer those credits to BUSPM. However, curricula, course requirements, and grading policies vary among courses taught by different instructors in different 51²Ö¿â schools and/or different institutions. Consequently, a grade of A or B in a course completed in another department or at another institution does not automatically guarantee or entitle the student to receive credit for the same subject in BUSPM. All requests for transfer credit must be submitted in writing to the Associate Academic Dean before matriculating into the program.Ìý

Requirements

    Observation

    The candidate for the DPM degree must be able to observe demonstrations and participate in experiments in the pre-clinical sciences.

    Communication

    The candidate for the DPM degree should be able to speak, to hear, and to observe patients in order to elicit information; to describe changes in mood, activity, and posture; and to perceive nonverbal communications.

    Motor Coordination or Function

    The candidate for the DPM degree should have sufficient motor function to elicit information from patients by palpation, auscultation, percussion, and other diagnostic maneuvers. The candidate should be able to order basic laboratory tests (urinalysis, CBC, etc.), carry out diagnostic procedures (phlebotomy, arthrocentesis, etc.), and read EKGs and radiographs.

    Intellectual-Conceptual, Integrative and Quantitative Abilities

    Problem-solving, the critical skill demanded of physicians, requires intellectual-conceptual, integrative and quantitative abilities that include measurement, calculation, reasoning, analysis, and synthesis.Ìý

    The candidate for the DPM degree must possess emotional health required for full use of their intellectual abilities, exercise of good judgment, prompt completion of all responsibilities attendant to the diagnosis and care of patients, and development of mature, sensitive and effective therapeutic relationships with patients.Ìý
