As stipulated by the American Montessori Society (AMS) the preparation of Montessori Secondary teachers does not involve the mastery of an established body of curriculum, but rather a thorough preparation in philosophy, program design, and specialized teaching methods that will enable the teacher to participate in the development of Montessori Secondary programs.
Certificate Program To meet the requirements of Middle and High School Montessori educators, the 17-credit Montessori Secondary I & II Certificate program was designed to address the educational and social emotional needs of 12 to 17 year-old adolescents.

The Programmatic Outcomes for the Montessori Secondary I & II Certificate Program are:
- Identify the learning needs of middle or high school students.
- Integrate the multidisciplinary knowledge, understanding, skills and values necessary to meet individual and group developmental needs.
- Formulate, organize, implement and evaluate a developmentally appropriate program for the secondary age group in accordance with the multidisciplinary Montessori philosophy.
- Design, develop, implement and evaluate effective, collaborative, and innovative learning contexts through an engaging Montessori curriculum that incorporates evidence-based practice, appropriate materials, resources and technologies.
- Interpret and communicate student and classroom data to administrators, parents and the community.
- Analyze and evaluate data from classroom observation to improve effectiveness of instruction.
- Continuously evaluate curricular, instructional, and assessment decisions as they impact the intellectual, social, emotional, psychological, and personal development of diverse learners.
- Engage in on-going professional development for oneself and provide personal development opportunities for peers to ensure continuous improvement in their discipline and pedagogical practice.
Montessori Secondary I-II Certificate Courses

This course examines Dr. Maria Montessori's life and philosophy, specifically how they apply to the adolescent child's intellectual, social-emotional, psychological and personal development, inclusive of the correlation to current research and evidence-based practices.

Students will study the biological, social-emotional and cognitive developmental stages during the adolescent period (ages 12 to 18). With a focus on Montessori philosophy, the course will focus on the transitions occurring within these domain areas and on developmentally relevant influences and issues such as peers, family, identity, autonomy, sexuality, school, achievement and adjustment.

This course will focus on providing students an opportunity to analyze, plan, design and evaluate developmentally appropriate curriculum. Additionally, students will gain a deeper understanding of the Montessori secondary core curriculum and its practices.

This course will consider the role of teacher as facilitator and model in creating a positive classroom environment for the purpose of effective interactions with adolescents and their families. Students will examine policies, practices, and strategies in schools for the purpose of building community and effective group dynamics.

This course explores implementation of Montessori principles for classroom leadership. Topics discussed will lead to effective management of a Montessori classroom, with special emphasis on the Montessori approach to assessment, observation, and communication at the secondary level.

Designed for the Montessori Specialist Degree candidate with a specialization in Preprimary Education, the course gives a synthesis of the Montessori curriculum for children ages 6 to 12 years. Key experiences will be highlighted in each of the academic areas with the aim of understanding how the curriculum is designed to meet the developmental needs of the school age child.

Applies the Montessori philosophy and method in implementing the Montessori Secondary I-II curriculum. The field-based experience is supervised by a site supervisor and a University instructor. Prerequisite: Completion of all certificate coursework.

Continues the application of Montessori curriculum and instruction techniques at the secondary level under the supervision of a Montessori-certified teacher and a University advisor. Prerequisite: Completion of all certificate coursework.

The program is designed to be completed within two years with two summer intensives and manageable online course loads in Fall and Spring. A one-year teaching practicum is also required of all students.

The certificate in secondary I-II can be completed in 20 credit hours. These credits can later be transferred to continue your studies and receive a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction.

The Montessori Secondary I-II is not state approved.
The certificate in Secondary I-II is in the process of becoming accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) and is an Applicant Affiliate with the American Montessori Society (AMS).
Credits gained through the certificate program can later transfer to a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
