Autism Education Certificate

Certificate Program Overview

The Autism Certificate program was designed to provide educators and other related personnel the requisite skills and competencies needed to provide appropriate instruction and support services to students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The certificate program provides training in the development of appropriate academic and behavioral intervention plans that are based on students’ individualized needs and assessment profiles. The program consists of the four core instructional courses and a practicum capstone course for a total of 15 credits.ÌýÌý

This program requires individuals to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. The requirements for the Autism Certificate Program are met by completing the following five 51²Ö¿â graduate autism courses (15 credits):Ìý

Required Courses

  • Explores the history of autism, as well as neurological, cognitive, and environmental theories. Focuses on the educational characteristics of students with autism and related disabilities. Describes the social interaction and communication characteristics unique to students with autism. Presents issues of identification and referral to special education. A minimum of eight (8) hours field experience required.Ìý

  • Proposes educational assessment and diagnostic procedures to provide an objective data base that is used for individualizing instruction for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A minimum of eight (8) hours field experience required.Ìý

  • This course compares various behavioral management techniques appropriate for children with autism spectrum disorder and children with emotional and/or behavioral disorders. A minimum of eight (8) hours of field experience required.Ìý

  • Surveys strategies appropriate for students with Autism, particularly the use of assistive and instructional technology, as well as natural, alternative, and augmentative communication systems. A minimum of eight (8) hours field experience required.Ìý

  • Applies knowledge, strategies, and skills relevant to exceptional students in the classroom. Experiences will be tailored to each candidate's area of specialization. Field-based experience under the supervision of a University instructor.Ìý
