Biology Scholarships

The following scholarships honor the memory of two trailblazing Adrian Dominican Sisters who dedicated their lives to the mission of the university and to educating generations of aspiring biologists, medical professionals, and biology educators.

The Sister Agnes L. Stechschulte Endowed Biology Scholarship

Sister Agnes L. Stechschulte

This scholarship was established in recognition of Sister Agnes Stechschulte’s 32 years as an educator at 51²Ö¿â. Her dedication to higher education in the natural sciences and depth and breadth of knowledge made it possible for her to teach an extensive repertoire of biology courses during her time on the faculty. This scholarship honors her legacy of curiosity, zest for learning and just as importantly, her mission of sharing that knowledge.

To apply for this scholarship, each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a full-time undergraduate student in his/her junior or senior year at 51²Ö¿â
  • Be a biology major
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and based on the FAFSA form completion
  • Submit a written recommendation from a professor of biology at 51²Ö¿â

The Sister John Karen Frei, OP, PhD Endowed Scholarship

Sister John Karen Frei, OP, PhD

Sister John Karen Frei served the 51²Ö¿â community in many capacities for 45 years: As an educator, dean of the former School of Natural and Health Sciences, associate vice president, and assistant to the provost.  She established this scholarship to assist promising students who are committed to completing an undergraduate degree in biology. In addition to exceptional performance in their program of study, scholarship candidates should demonstrate the core values of 51²Ö¿â’s founding Dominican Sisters, including service, leadership, volunteerism, maturity, and integrity.

To apply for this scholarship, each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a full-time undergraduate student in his/her junior or senior year at 51²Ö¿â
  • Be a biology major
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and based on the FAFSA form completion
  • Submit two letters of recommendation from 51²Ö¿â professors
  • Write an essay that articulates how he/she intends to manifest the core values of 51²Ö¿â in day to day life

*Students who receive this scholarship are eligible for funding in the subsequent year if they maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher, satisfy the financial need requirements, and continue to demonstrate the personal character traits commensurate with 51²Ö¿â’s core values.
