Program Courses Overview

General Biology, BS. BIOT

For students interested in Pre-Physician Assistant, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Occupational Therapy, Environmental Biology, Biotechnology, or General Biology Programs

Overview of BS.BIOT curriculum (total 120 credits with 40 credits in Biology)

BIOLOGY CORE required courses:

  • General Biology I with lab (4 credits)
  • General Biology II with lab (4 credits)
  • Genetics; Either Principles of Human Genetics (3 credits) -or- Genetics with lab (4 credits)

At least one course from each of the 5 areas listed below:

  1. Biodiversity; examples are: Botany, Zoology, Biology of Fishes, Parasitology,
  2. Cell and Molecular Biology; examples are: Microbiology, Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Molecular Biology, Histology, Immunology
  3. Organismal Biology; examples are: Anatomy, Comparative Anatomy, Physiology, Comparative Physiology, Human Nutrition, Animal Nutrition, Embryology
  4. Ecology and Environmental Science; examples are: Environmental Sciences, Marine Biology, Ecology, Animal Behavior
  5. A Capstone Course; taken as a senior, you will present research on an interdisciplinary topic. Examples are: Evolution, Virology, Marine Biology Seminar or Senior Seminar

Student must fulfill the following Bioethics or Environmental Ethics requirements:

  • Bioethics (3 credits) -or- Bio-Medical Ethics (3 credits) -or- Environmental Ethics (3 credits)

In addition to 40 BIOLOGY credits, all Biology majors take Co-requisites in Math, Chemistry and Physics.

  • CHEMISTRY: 12 credits of Chemistry. General Chemistry I & II with labs and either Chemistry for Health Sciences or Organic Chemistry I.
  • MATH: 9 credits of Mathematics or Calculus I.
  • PHYSICS: 4 credits of Physics with labs.

Additional Biology electives not listed, can be used to complete the 40 credits for the major.

Students will also need to complete University General Education requirements.
